Make it Yourself Playdoh

Updated: Jan 15, 2022

As the warmer weather fades into fall, little hands get cooped up inside and need something to do. I also had some ingredients that were past their best by date, so I went for it; we made homemade playdoh! This recipe makes ALOT of playdoh and you just might want to divide it up rather than letting the kids play with the whole batch at once. I only have 2 boys, so I immediately divided the batch in half and bagged it up to store for next time. I would say that this batch is enough to keep 4 little hands quite busy, for a while anyway.

4 cups of flour

1 1/2 cups of salt

4-6 tablespoons of vegetable oil (I haven't tried coconut oil but that would smell really good!)

1 1/2 cups of warm water

2-quart sized zip lock bags

Food coloring is optional

Essential oils are fun but also optional

Put all ingredients into a large bowl and mix. I prefer to use my hands to blend the ingredients. This might seem obvious, but I'd suggest removing any rings before doing this.

If the dough gets a little dry you can add a few drops of water.

Store the dough in zip lock bags or an airtight container of your choice and keep it in the refrigerator between uses. The boys have played with this 3 or 4 times now and the dough is still in good condition!
